Designer Jeans

January 20, 2011 in Articles

A trend that started with Jordache and Calvin Klein in the late 70′s, designer jeans have made a strong comeback.

Dressed up or dressed down, designer jeans are a fashion staple among the 20-something crowd and are gaining popularity with high school kids and adults. Some people don’t understand the point of paying more than $100 for a pair of jeans, but plenty of others are willing to fork out $200-$300 for the latest trends.

We can probably thank Hollywood for keeping the trend popular. Heidi Klum was recently recruited for a Jordache ad campaign aimed at reviving their designer line. Many other celebrities have been paid to put a face on new designs while other have worn the jeans simply because they like them.

Even without a Hollywood budget, fashion-conscious women (and men!) love having at least one pair of designer jeans in their wardrobe rotation.

There are a selection of popular brands that you can find at your local Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus or designer boutique.

7 for all Mankind – A Los Angeles based brand formed in 2000, these jeans are sold in over 80 countries.

Rockin Republic – Founded by an avid cyclist and designed by former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, the distinct “R” brands most of their jeans.

True Religion – California brand established in 2002, telltale “horseshoe” emblem adorns pockets.

Diesel – An Italian design company created in 1978, diesel gained popularity across Europe and eventually the U.S.

Whatever brand you favor, the price tag reflects the quality, look and name of designer jeans. Some women swear by the flattering cuts of 7s while others claim the Diesel fabric is superior to any other. Ultimately, the consumer decides which design is worth their dollar, and as a result designer jean companies will come and go. The next trend is likely just around the corner!

Plus Size Clothing: Fashion for All

January 5, 2011 in Articles

If you’ve ever visited a store only to feel like the clothes you loved were only available in sizes much too small for you, you aren’t alone.

Hundreds of thousands of women search the internet every month for plus size clothing, and even more scour the racks at local retailers for fashionable but size-appropriate clothing.

Options are poor at chain retailers, but things are even worse at the designer level. When was the last time a plus time shopper felt comfortable going into a designer boutique? Chances are there wouldn’t be any pieces over size 10 (and that 10 is optimistic).

Who can blame you if you don’t want to shop someplace with “plus size” in the name. Plus sized women should be able to find the same fashion forward clothing available to the smaller-sized women that designers cater to.

Luckily, some designers are taking note and have created lines geared towards full-figured women.

One of our favorite designers, Marc Jacobs, announced that he will be launching a plus size line this year, giving some high fashion options for women who wear sizes 14 and up. Believe it or not, he is the first in the high-fashion industry to undertake this type of effort. Other designers argue that there just isn’t enough demand for plus size fashion, but Jacob’s line will be the litmus test for this notion.

We hope that other classic designers will follow suit and begin offering clothing for women of all sizes. Until that happens, some more affordable chains like Forever 21, Old Navy and DKNY have created lines that offer great looking options for sizes 14 and above.

Size shouldn’t be an issue when wanting to look your best, so love your curves and look forward to a fashion world that embraces designs in all sizes. It won’t be long in coming!

Fall Fashion 2010

November 5, 2010 in Articles

Have you gotten a late start on fall fashion this season? Looking for some pieces that will carry you through November and on through Spring?

If you paid any attention to the runways this year, you know they were flush with furry coats, blazers, chunky knits and camel hues.

Whether it’s a dress, coat or pantsuit, camel is the latest fashion trend this season. Designers unveiled a long line of camel-hued pieces that will make you excited to update your Summer closet- a task that usually makes you long for those warm days at the beach.

But this year, bring on the cold weather. I have a feeling your will gladly trade in those flip flops and rompers for the fall fashions of 2010.

Camel Coat. A fitted, feminine coat in this neutral color will have your

friends envious this fall. This classic color and style will last in your

closet for seasons to come. Make sure you pick a coat that will allow

you to layer for warmth but still keep your figure from looking bulky.

Camel Boot. A tall boot is a must have for all fall wardrobes.

You may already own a black pair of boots, so why not update your

collection with a camel boot that will complement almost any fall outfit.

Pair with a pair of thick fashion tights to keep warm with skirts.

Camel Bag. This fall, think about adding an oversize bag to your

purse collection. This light colored bag will match any outfit, not

to mention hold all that winter gear.

Camel Cardigan. Maybe you haven’t been converted to the cardigan trend yet

because it’s too “librarian” for you, but a long cardigan is so comfortable and

versatile that you will swear by them once you give it a try! Buy one in a neutral camel tone to add a modern

piece to your cold weather collection.

Finding Designer Clothes Online

October 29, 2010 in Articles

Scroll, click, buy. Sometimes I think shopping for clothes online is easier than sending an email!

To be fair, the easy part actually comes after you find worthwhile sites that carry clothing you want and have competitive pricing.

So, I’ve decided to make a little guide to finding designer clothes online. Maybe this will introduce you to a new site or just serve as a reminder that you need to visit that favorite site you’ve been neglecting for some shopping therapy.

The Usuals: Norstrom.com, NeimanMarcus.com, SaksFifthAvenue.com

  • Pros: You will be able to find clothing from almost any designer imaginable, so you won’t spend a huge amount of time searching, unless you like online window shopping.
  • Cons: You will be paying full price for these designer duds, large department stores have huge markups.
  • Shipping: These sites charge anywhere from $8.95 to $21.95 for delivery. If you sign up for their newsletters, you will receive special “free shipping” offers from time to time, but these will require minimum spending of $150 or more.
  • Bottom Line: If you are pressed for time and need to find the right outfit fast or if you are not on a budget, go for it!

Overstock.com

  • Pros: You can find cheap deals on designer clothes every day, from CK to Michael Kors. Great customer service based on online reviews.
  • Cons: Less clothing selection than sites dedicated solely to fashion, since they also sell furniture etc.
  • Shipping: Probably the best shipping deal available online, $2.95 is all you will pay, no matter where you live or how big your order is! Overstock.com also occasionally offers $1 shipping specials.
  • Bottom Line: Check this site regularly for new items and you are sure to find designer clothes you like for cheap.

BlueFly.com

  • Pros: More designers available than other discount clothing sites- we’re talking over 700. BlueFly also features frequent sales offering 50-75% off.
  • Cons: Sometimes trends are a little late in making it to the site. You might not find the latest fashions
  • Shipping: Standard is $7.95 and expedited is $14.95. Pretty average for online clothing retailers.
  • Bottom Line: This is is a standard discount designer store (not our favorite or least), so if you’re trying to shop online, you might as well make this one of your stops.

Betsey Johnson Going Corporate?

October 22, 2010 in Articles

I never thought that all the crazy economic bailouts would have anything to do with my favorite designer, but earlier this month Betsey Johnson made headline news when she needed bailout of her own.

By Steve Madden, to be exact.

I already knew that Madden has licensed Betsey’s handbags and belts for a while, but I couldn’t believe that the buyout rumors were true! Ok, ok, so maybe Betsey needed the help. Desperately. Something about a default on a, well, little $48.8 million loan…but come on!

I have actually decided that this is a good move, for both Betsey and Steve. At first, I was worried that Betsey would lose her flair for the daring if she became a drone in the Madden empire, but I had to remind myself that I love Madden’s designs and Betsey is too true to her art to ever let down her fans. If nothing else, Betsey’s designs can be even more daring with all of the funding that Steve has to offer.

In fact, Steve has already announced that he wants to increase shoe and day dress production- two of my favorite Betsey Johnson designs! I’m hoping that her 2011 lines will have lots of bold and flirty colors combined with her over-the-top embellishments. Will animal prints be in play? I doubt Betsey could do without them.

Now that Steve and Betsey have teamed up, there are a few items I would love to see from the dynamic duo (I can dream, can’t I?):

  • A Betsey inspired heel in zebra print
  • Chunky jewelry that pairs feminine delicacy with some vintage textures
  • A purse that offers Madden’s utility combined with Betsey’s design

What would you like to see?
